Thambittu

Thambittu is one of the traditional sweets ,it is done for one particular occasion and that is Naag Panchami. This is done the previous day  and offered it to God on the day of pooja (it is not even tasted until it is offered to god the next day). The proportions need to be accurate for this sweet. This is done with roasted channa daal. Roasted Chana daal ( ಪುಟಾಣಿ  ಅಥವಾ  ಹುರಿ ಕಡಲೆಕಾಯಿ ) is first ground into flour and then made into laddoos .

Ingredients,
Roasted Chana daal ( powdered , flour)  - 2 cups
Ghee - 1/2 cup
Jaggery -  1 1/4 cups ( coarsely ground like very small chunks)
Dry coconut- 1/4 cup( grated)
Poppy seeds- 1 tbsp
Cardamom - 5-6 (seeds to be crushed.)

  1. Roast slightly dry coconut and poppy seeds and keep aside.
  2. Take 2 cups of powdered roasted Chana daal or grind roasted Chana daal in to flour.
  3. In a Pan  take 1 1/4 cups of jaggery, add 1/4 cup of water and heat it till the jaggery dissolves completely and froth is seen.
  4. Slowly add ghee to this and take this off the stove.
  5. Add 2 cups of roasted channa daal flour  and mix well.
  6. Add grated  dry coconut, poppy seeds and cardamom powder and mix well.
  7. Leave it aside for a minute not for a long time, left this for a long time might make it difficult to make laddoos.
  8. Take a fistful of the mixture prepared and make laddoos.

Heat 1 1/4 cup of jaggery with 1/4 cup of water .
Make sure that there are no chunks left.

Add ghee to the frothing jaggery.

Add roasted chana daal flour.switch off the stove.

Add grated dry coconut, poppy seeds and cardamom powder.

Mix well.

Make laddoos when they are warm.
