For any kind of south Indian breakfast ,its incomplete without coconut chutney.Fresh grated coconut is grinded with Roasted chana dal ( Roasted bengal gram),green chillies and cumin seeds and salt.Tempering is the one which gives the coconut chutney its flavor.This can be called an authentic South Indian chutney.
Ingredients,
Fresh coconut- 3/4 cup
Roasted chana dal- 1/4 cup
cumin seeds (jeera) - 1/4 tbsp
green chillies- 2-3
water- 1/2 cup ( + 1/4 cup if required,depends on the consistency you want the chutney to be)
lemon juice- 1/2 tbsp (optional)
For tempering,
For tempering,take 1 tbsp of oil ,add 1/2 tsp of mustard seeds,1/2 tsp of cumin seeds, a pinch of asafoetida ,4-5 curry leaves and 1 red chilli.
Grind roasted chana dal with green chillies and cumin seeds till they are coarse.
Add salt and grated coconut with the rest of the ingredients and grind it to a smooth paste.
Add lemon juice and tempering to the chutney.
