Gujrathi Kadi

I happened to eat this at a party ,I was head over heals on this recipe.I love to make recipes that are spicy enough, but my kids always say no to it,but this recipe with a little extra spice they didn't mind it.I was really happy to see them enjoy this .I would make this everytime.Usually the way this recipe is done is with all whole spices ,they do not use the ground spices like i did.I roasted the spices first with a drop or 2 of cooking oil and then grinded it in a coffee bean grinder and then added this to the tampering while preparing kadhi. We also do this kadhi but without the spices and add a few vegetables. This was a little twist to the kadhi I usually make.

Ingredients for Kadhi,
Besan or Gram flour- 3 tbsps.
yugurt- 3/4 cup
turmeric-1/2 tbsp ( 1/2 tsp also gives kadi a nice taste and color)
green chilli-1 (optional,i added this along with the other spices and the curry was a bit spicy)
ginger-1 tbsp(grated)
coriander-4 to 5 sprigs
cloves-2
cinnamon-1 inch
coriander seeds-1 tbsp
red chillies whole-2
salt-1 1/2 tsp

For tampering,
oil-1 tbsp
ghee-1 tsp
mustard seeds-1 tsp
cumin seeds-1 tsp
hing or Asafoetida - a pinch
curry leaves-4 to 5

  1. Grind in blender or mixie ginger, fresh coriander and green chilli.Once they are done add gram flour yogurt and turmeric and blend the whole mixture with water required enough to grind.
  2. Roast the cloves ,cinnamon ,coriander seeds and red chillies in a pan with a drop of oil and make it into powder .I used coffee bean grinder to grind all the spices.
  3. Heat the pan and pour oil and ghee,as it gets heated add mustard seeds, once the start to splutter add cumin seeds,a pinch of asafoetida or hing and curry leaves.
  4. Add all the blended mix and ground powder of spices and almost 1-2 cups of water into the tampering and add 1 1/2 tsp of salt and bring it to boil once the curry starts to rise, you know to switch off the stove. It usually doesn't take much time to get cooked.Leave the curry on the still hot  stove top to get the curry get settled.
  5. Relish this with your favorite rice or ideally Khichdi.
Roast these ingredients and grind it into
fine powder.

Cut the green chilli and grated gingercoriander and grind
everything with besan and yogurt.Add water required enough.
(almost 1/2 a cup)
Green chilli is optional as it makes kadi very spicy

Make tempeing .

Add the blended mix .Add 1-2 cups of water.

Add the ground spice powder.

Bring it to boil.Do not boil more.
Turn off the stove the moment it starts to boil.

Kadi after it settles down.

Gujrathi kadi.
